Beyond sailing more than 150nm, our goals with the trip were:
a) to test our shifts schedule (3hrs long)
b) to test our freeze dried food options and jetboil galley
c) to test a number of improvements we had made to the boat to ease its handling while double-handed
d) to challenge our polars on the reach
We left RYC on Feb 12th around 10am and made it out of the Bay under spinnaker, before switching to the Code 3 and head west, keeping an eye on cargos and validating that our AIS setup was fine. Wind was 6-12-knots during the night and we made it back on Sunday around 3pm, having sailed 155nm (see attached GPS trace via the Navionics app). We motored for about 45mins on the way back as the ocean breeze died in the early hours of Sunday, but once we were a couple of miles away from the Golden Gate the fog did catch upon us and we had a blast entering the Bay in a thick fog and more than 18knots of breeze.
Overall the trip was very successful and we have decided to take one of these overnight trips every month until the race starts.
